ABOUT

ABOUT

The Philippine Children’s Medical Center Pediatric Surgery Fellowship Program is one of the distinguished Pediatric Surgery programs accredited by the Philippine Society of Pediatric Surgeons and Philippine College of Surgeon. Established in 1981, this 2- year training program has continuously trained and produced competent pediatric surgeons equipped with skills and knowledge at par with pediatric surgeons internationally.

The training program, led by Section Head Dr. Alvin Caballes and Training officer Dr. Lester Suntay, consists of six experienced consultants specialized in a variety of fields such as Neonatal Surgery, Pediatric Urology, and Minimally invasive surgery. The institution where the program lies, offers training to several subspecialties under Pediatrics such as Pulmonology, Nephrology, Neurology, Ophthalmology, ENT, Neonatal Medicine, Perinatal Medicine. Because of this, the program handles a wide variety of cases ranging from Neonatal Medicine to Tumor surgeries. Hence, we are able to offer the best management for our patients through a multidisciplinary approach.

The fellows are trained to do diagnostic examinations catered in specific pediatric surgical cases such as suction rectal biopsies and contrast enemas for diagnosing Hirschsprung’s disease, hydrostatic and pneumatic reduction for intussusception which is both diagnostic and therapeutic. They are also exposed and skilled in managing specialized pediatric surgery cases such as Imperforate anus and Cloaca repair. In addition, they are trained to do Laparoscopic Surgery for all pediatric age groups- neonates to adolescents.

The strength of the program lies on PCMC being a referral center, exposing the trainees to variety of cases in all pediatric age groups. As a result, this has provided the trainees eligibility to take the board examination given by the Philippine Society of Pediatric Surgeons.

The PCMC Pediatric Surgery training program will continuously strive for excellence in training competent and proficient surgeons venturing in this field providing them the skills and knowledge suitable for them to be called “the Pediatric surgeons for the Filipino children”.
