 Perinatal |
The Perinatal Care and Neonatology Center of the Philipine Children’s Medical Center was estabilished in 1988 with the aim to provide all aspects of perinatal care especially services for high risk pregnancies and complicated deliveries. From 2006 to 2008, there is an increasing number of admissions, both pay and service cases. Furthermore, there is also a growing number of patients at the Antepartum Unit with referrals from private and tertiary hospitals, network hospitals (National Kidney and Transplant Institute of the Philippines, Philippine Heart Center, and Lung Center of the Philippines), and even the provinces.
This is attributed to recognition of the Perinatal Center as a center equipped with facilities needed for the care of high-risk pregnancies and neonates, and competent staff. Because of this, there was a significant decline in the Perinatal Mortality Rate of 101.1 per 1000 livebirths in 2007 to 62.5 per 1000 livebirths in 2008, with an over-all increase in survival rate of babies delivered at 26 to 33 weeks gestational age.
We have established linkages with member hospitals of the Perinatal Council namely: Amang Rodriguez Memorial Medical Center, Quezon City General Hospital, Veterans Memorial Medical Center, and Lying-In Centers under the Quezon City Health Department. This is in the hope of improving perinatal outcome and maternal health and also of coming up with perinatal and maternal indices to aid us in our scientific research.
With the aim for the improvement in the care for complicated pregnancies, the Perinatal Center also provided Fellowship Training for Perinatology. OB residents from hospitals all over the country rotate at the Perinatal Center for three months training. To date, it has been supporting efforts for continuing medical education. In March 2007, the Perinatal Center participated in the 23rd International Congress of Fetus As a Patient International Society held at Edsa Shangri-La Manila. This was hosted by Fetus As a Patient Institute of the Philippines and was attended by foreign speakers who shared their knowledge and expertise on the realm of maternal-fetal medicine. The objectives of the event are the following: to study the effects of maternal and fetal malnutrition; to present strategies on how to optimize intrauterine fetal conditions; to determine the optimum timing of delivery and its impact on the offsprings; and, to contribute to the reduction of type 2 diabetes mellitus, hypertension and coronary artery disease in adults by antenatal prevention. At present, research endeavours has also been conducted for the advancement of perinatal care.
In view of the innovations on diagnostic and therapeutic strategies, Philippine Children’s Medical Center purchased a top-of-the-line ultrasound (Accuvix by Medison) with color/power Doppler and 3D/4D capability, and three electronic fetal monitors with twin monitoring. With the innovations offered, improved surveillance and management is being offered to mothers and fetuses as well.
The vision of the Perinatal Center has led to the undying and untiring efforts of the staff for service to mothers and babies, and will thus continue not just to aid but also to stimulate each to lend his/her expertise and knowledge in this endeavour. |
