The surgical services made additional strides in 2008, with enhancements in its capabilities and improvements in its provided services. An ample complement of expert remains readily available and equipment and facilities have been progressively expanded. The operating room area infrastructure was upgraded. The latter included renovations in key patient care areas, specifically the Reception section as well as Post-Anesthesia Care Unit. A remodeling of the surgical conference room was likewise undertaken, improving access as well as utility. Such translates to an improved learning environment and, consequently, better patient services. The operating room renovation has also increased the capacity for out-patient or day surgeries. The latter will help address the continuously growing need for such services in the pediatric population.
The Surgical Department likewise continues to make available pioneering pediatric services and programs. Within its operating room complex is housed the Endoscopy Unit, the only such facility in the country, which offers a wide range of flexible and rigid endoscopic resources specifically for infants and children. The ground-breaking fellowship programs in Pediatric Urology and Pediatric Otorhinolaryngology have not only provided new specialist training opportunities, but has likewise augmented the services available for the center’s clients.
Beyond these developments, the Department has continued to provide excellent service for patients requiring expert surgical care in General Pediatric Surgery, Neurosurgery, Thoracic Cardiovascular Surgery, Orthopedics, as well as Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery. Pediatric Gynecology, while administratively more proximate to the distinct Perinatology unit, nonetheless utilizes the Department’s facilities and constantly interacts with the other surgical specialties. |
